Morecambe 3 Luton Town 0

The Shrimps shocked high-flying Luton Town with a fine win at the Globe Arena.

On a day where both sets of fans remembered the late, great Eric Morecambe, it was the Shrimps who brought their followers the sunshine with an excellent display to clinch a second successive home win.

It was also a win that earned them the inaugural Eric Morecambe Trophy.

Despite missing boss Jim Bentley, who was at home with a virus, the Shrimps started well and took the lead in the 16th minute.

Jamie Devitt sent across a free-kick to the far post, Alex Kenyon headed back across goal and top scorer Kevin Ellison scored his eighth of the campaign with a well struck finish from 12 yards.

The Shrimps looked a real threat going forward and soon had a man advantage when former Fleetwood man Steve McNulty was sent off for two bookings in the space of two minutes just before the half hour.

After a late trip on Ellison, McNulty inexplicably crashed into Paul Mullin moments later and referee Andy D’Urso had no option but to send him off.

From there Morecambe dominated.

But they had to wait until the stroke of half-time to add a second goal.

Shaun Beeley clipped a ball from the edge of the area to the far post and skipper
Mark Hughes headed
past Mark Tyler from six yards out.

After failing to test Morecambe in the first half, Luton started sharply after the break and within seconds Mark Cullen forced Scott Davies into a neat save.

But it proved to be a rare attack for the visitors as Morecambe went on to create a host of chances.

Tyler made a string of fine saves, denyng Ellison three time ands Devitt once,
before Laurence Wilson fizzed two efforts over the

The pressure finally paid off nine minutes from time when Ryan Edwards headed a Devitt corner down and Padraig Amond turned the ball home from six yards out.

Luton pushed for a consolation with Fraser Franks testing Davies with a close range effort.

But the Shrimps held on for their sixth clean sheet of the season.
