The signing of the former Football League striker – who played a number of games for both Morecambe and Oldham Athletic in League Two –has been a real coup for the Dolly Blues this summer.

The 25-year-old has been away from the game for the past year due to injury after leaving Barrow last summer.

Now fully fit, Turner featured for 45 minutes, scoring the second goal in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Colne in a pre-season victory at Holt House.

He would also have been in action for City on Tuesday night, but the fixture at Padiham was called off because of heavy showers.

Fell believes Turner – who began his career as a youngster with City when he was studying at Myerscough College – will be a huge asset to the club for the forthcoming season but reckons it will take time before he reaches full throttle.

“Rhys just needs time,” said Fell. “He just needs to be on the pitch.

“The injuries that he had aren’t an issue for him any more. He has been training with Bolton this summer and came through some games with them so there are no issues with any injuries.

“He’s just got to get that match sharpness and match fitness.

“But we have got four weeks or so to get him that sharpness before the new season starts on September 19.

“I have no issue in saying that if we get Rhys fit and close to his best then he is good enough to rip the NPL Premier Division apart.

“I am hopeful – as you are with all your new signings – that he could be the difference for us this season.”

Fell revealed that he is still on the lookout for players who will improve his squad, but does not envisage too many changes between now and the start of the season.

Three trialists were in the squad at the weekend and Fell is expected to make a decision as to whether to offer them a new deal by this weekend.

City have no game this weekend, but they are hoping to arrange a friendly fixture on Monday evening.
