“We were rubbish right the way through,” blasted the skipper as the dust settled on a 3-0 reverse in Bedfordshire.

In his role as captain, Browne was on media duty to speak on behalf of the PNE dressing room and it was a very blunt assessment.

“It was embarrassing, I think as the captain out there it was inexcusable,” said the midfielder.

“To walk off the pitch having performed like that and come away with a result like that was embarrassing.

“Not one of us played well. The only positive to come from it is that we can’t literally get any worse than that.

“Our form is up and down, I didn’t think we played that well against Middlesbrough the other night but like a lot of games this season the first goal is important.

“At Luton we didn’t play football, we weren’t competitive, we weren’t aggressive, there was literally nothing from start to finish.

“That wasn’t a five minute spell I can think of when we were on top, we were rubbish right the way through.

“Maybe if we had scored first it would have been different but we deserved the thrashing we got.”

Browne was poor in the centre of midfield and didn’t hide from that.

On the pitch, the Republic of Ireland international could feel things getting beyond North End.

“You tell it was passing us by and we couldn’t seem to do anything about it,” he said.

“We tried to go long and that didn’t work, we tried to play and that didn’t work.

“There weren’t any passages of play where we looked decent.

“We were way off, there were no excuses and I’m not going to make any.

“In every aspect of the game Luton beat us. Every position on the pitch they outplayed us and outfought us, we were second best.

“It is good that we have got another game on Tuesday to look at, that is the best thing we can say about it.

“We have been inconsistent all season but when we have lost matches there hasn’t been a lot in them, unfortunately that wasn’t the case with this one.”
