Three substitutes scoring in a match for Preston North End?.......It's been done before!

The headline of Preston North End’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday was three players coming off the bench to score.

But what Scott Sinclair, Jayden Stockley and Brad Potts did at Hillsborough in the space of 18 minutes has been done before by the Lilywhites.

It happened at Villa Park in October 2018 when North End drew 3-3 with Aston Villa.

Daniel Johnson, Paul Gallagher and Louis Moult came on and helped turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead, only for Villa to grab a late equaliser and then see a last minute penalty saved.

There have been now been six games this season when North End substitutes have found the net.

Josh Harrop has done it twice, at Bradford in the Carabao Cup and in the 5-1 Championship win against Barnsley.

Gallagher was a first-half substitute at Charlton in November and his winning penalty sent PNE top of the division.

Against Luton Town at Deepdale in December, Stockley scored the winner after coming off the bench.

Then in February, Alan Browne came on as a sub and headed the winner against Hull City.

How substitutes impact the game could grow further in the remaining four games of the regular season.

With the Championship now fully in the pattern of playing weekend and midweek, fatigue could set in and changes from the bench become crucial.

Clubs voted to adopt FIFA’s five substitutes rule for the season’s restart.

There is talk of that rule change being extended to cover next season, although leagues vote individually on whether to accept it.
