"The cherry on top": Louis Moult says winner capped fine team performance for Preston at Nottingham Forest

The striker was on target 11 minutes into the second half as Alex Neil’s side got back on track with a 1-0 win at the City Ground on Saturday.

“The goal was the cherry on top for me,” said Moult.

“As an away performance, I thought it was fantastic from us.

“We dug in, were spirited and every man worked for each other.

“I thought we were absolutely brilliant.

“The determination to not concede was evident and the togetherness we have was really on show.

“That comes from the football club as a whole.

“If you look at the following we had from the fans, that was fantastic as well.”

Moult’s fifth of the season saw him slide home to convert Lukas Nmecha’s cross from close range.

It was a moment that continued his recent impressive run in the side, the former Motherwell man starting for the third straight game in the Championship.

“I absolutely love goals like that,” Moult admitted.

“All my goals are very similar. I sniff chances out, and am a penalty-box striker.

“That’s been on show of late.

“It’s not just about me though and the performances throughout the team were fantastic.”

At the other end of the pitch, Declan Rudd kept his place in goal despite his error in the 3-0 defeat against Birmingham last time out.

He made a crucial save late on to keep out a Daryl Murphy header as he justified Neil’s decision to stick by his man with Chris Maxwell waiting in the wings.

“It was important Dec kept his head held high,” said Moult.

“He’s been brilliant in training all week when he quite easily could have thrown the towel in.

“It just shows what kind of person he is and I thought he was fantastic.

“Everything that came in the box he dealt with and the boys in front of him made sure he didn’t have a lot to do.

“The save at the end is a fantastic one, especially when you’ve not had a lot to do which shows how aware and alert he was.”
