Akpo Sodje’s stay with Preston North End is over after he rejected a new contract.

His short-term deal ran out yesterday and the striker has opted against signing a new one, even though he can’t play for another club until January.

Sodje made 17 appearances for North End - six starts and 11 from the bench - scoring seven goals.

He was a second-half substitute in last week’s defeat to Crewe, with his last involvement in PNE colours being during Tuesday’s behind-closed-doors friendly at Stoke.

The 32-year-old initially joined North End on trial in pre-season after coming back from a spell playing in China.

His performances in three friendly matches earned him a four-week contract, and he’s been signing month-to-month deals ever since.

That was in the knowledge that he wouldn’t be able to play for another club until the transfer window opens on New Year’s Day.

The last of Sodje’s seven goals came at Morecambe in October when he netted twice in a 4-2 victory in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
