The midfielder had been in negotiations for some months with North End over a new deal, his contract having been due to run out in June.

He joins Alan Browne in agreeing new terms, the skipper having signed a similar deal a fortnight ago.

The new deal runs until the summer of 2023.

Johnson said: "It is put to bed now and for quite a while it has been what I have focused on, so I can get tunnel vision and focus on my football.

"I have been here quite a while and I am happy to still be here. The goal now is to kick on and start producing what I know I can produce and keep helping the team.

“I have become one of the senior players at this football club and it is about showing that and helping pass on information to the younger boys in the squad."

Johnson, 28, has been with North End for six years since signing from Aston Villa for a bargain £50,000 in January 2015.

He's made 240 appearances in all competitions scoring 47 goals.

North End manager Alex Neil said: "Everyone is well aware what I think of Daniel as a player and as a person. He is one of the senior boys in the dressing room and has been an important part of the squad for my entire time here.

"When he has been available, he has been a regular in the team for that time and has shown everyone what he brings to the squad and I am delighted that he has shown the commitment to the club and I look forward to continuing to work with him."
