According to reports, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney apologised to Preston North End keeper Thorsten Stuckmann over the controversial penalty which sealed Monday’s FA Cup tie at Deepdale.

Rooney shook hands with the PNE keeper as they left the pitch and the two appeared to be laughing.

Stuckmann was booked by referee Phil Dowd for the challenge which gave United the third goal in a 3-1 win.

National newspapers are quoting a ‘Preston insider’ as saying: “At the end of the game, Rooney went over to Thorsten and said, ‘Sorry, but I saw you coming and I had to get out of the way’.”
