Preston North End striker Emil Riis up for the fight amid transfer rumours

Despite netting 21 times last season, the Dane did not nail down a starting spot under Ryan Lowe for the majority of the Liverpudlian’s time in charge last time out.

He was often used in rotation with Ched Evans, with Cameron Archer starting alongside either and due to this, Riis developed a knack from scoring off the bench.

Without Archer this time around Riis will likely be the main man for North End this season, though they are in the market for one or two more strikers.

He told the Lancashire Post: “We lost out on Dan Iversen who is not coming back so to see some great goalkeepers coming in is pleasing, we've got the position well covered now.

“It's good to see new faces and it's what you expect, we don't have many players or a full squad yet. I'd expect to see some more new faces as well.

"Me and Cam scored a lot of goals together last season so I wouldn't mind to see him come back.

"I always need the competition, it's good, even though I had a good season last year, even in that season I needed the competition to keep me on my toes and keep me at 100 per cent. I enjoy new strikers to keep me on my toes, I'd be happy to see new strikers coming in.”

After finishing 13th in the Championship last season, Riis is looking further up the table this time around.

He wants the Lilywhites to be ambitious with their aims and has his sights set on the top six.

He said: “He's had more time to come in and do his thing and set his view. We're always going to try and go for the play-offs, we're not going to look at the relegation battle we want to be up there.

"Hopefully we can start the season well with a couple of wins. I can only speak for myself but you always want to go to the next level, we're going to look as high up the table as we can - we'll see where that puts us. I think we should be aiming for the play-offs.”
