The Lilywhites have yet to do any incoming transfer business during this window which for EFL clubs runs until October 16.

Neil spoke about the situation at his Thursday press conference ahead of Saturday's trip to his former club Norwich City.

Speaking from the Springfields training ground via Zoom, Neil said: "I wouldn't say we are close with anything.

"What we have done is target a number of players, a large number..

"The difficultly we have got is trying to make our squad better with what we have got to spend to improve, as we need to improve.

"What I'm not going to do is accept just any player on the books to tick us along.

"The squad I have got at the moment we need to add quality to. I don't just need another body - the squad is currently in good shape.

"I need someone or more than one if I could, to come in and give us a hand.

"It is extremely difficult to find these players who will come for what is on offer."
