Brownhill left Deepdale to sign for the Robins in June 2016 and saw his career develop well as Ashton Gate.

Part of the youth training compensation package North End agreed with City at the time included a sell-on clause.

It means they receive a percentage of the profit Bristol City have made on Brownhill in selling him to Burnley.

The 24-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Turf Moor and moves for an undisclosed fee.

Brownhill did have a clause in his contract which would have allowed him to move for £7m this summer.

Whether Bristol City managed to get a higher figure by selling him in January, remains to be seen.

After completing the move on Thursday evening, Brownhill told Burnley's official club website: "I’ve been building myself up to this moment and I feel like it’s the right time in my career to make that step up and show everyone I can play in the Premier League."
