Preston North End centre-half Paul Huntington signs a new contract at Deepdale

Huntington, who was under contract until the summer, has penned a one-year extension which takes him through to June 2022.

The 33-year-old has made 295 appearances for North End in all competitions, with Boxing Day's 1-0 win at Derby being his 250th league game in a PNE shirt.

He joined the Lilywhites on a Bosman in July 2012, part of the Graham Westley 'revolution' which saw the squad get a big overhaul.

Huntington said: "Next season will be my 10th season here and I'm delighted to get security for myself in these uncertain times.

"It's important to continue at a club which means a lot to me, Preston has been a really good home for me for the last eight-and-a-half years.

"While I'm here I will continue to try and improve and learn, you are never too old or never too young to take things on board.

"It was an easy decision to stay here, it was something we had been talking about for a good few weeks and it is a weight off my mind.

"I can just concentrate on the football now."

Huntington was player of the year when PNE were promoted from League One in 2015, scoring at Wembley in the 4-0 play-off final victory over Swindon Town.

Nicknamed the 'Cumbrian Cannavaro', the Carlisle-born centre-half is a popular figure with the Preston fans.

In the last couple of seasons his first-team opportunities have become fewer but North End manager Alex Neil still regards him as a key member of the dressing room.

This campaign Huntington has made 14 appearances - four more than the whole of last season - with him starting the last five matches.
