Jayden Stockley came off the bench to head a 90th minute equaliser to earn the 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane.

It was their second leveller of the behind closed doors contest, Daniel Johnson having netted from the spot.

John Lundstram had given the Premier League side the lead, with Billy Sharp restoring that advantage after Johnson’s penalty.

PNE head to Goodison Park on Saturday (3pm) to take on Everton in their final friendly of the shortened pre-season.

Neil said: “I thought it was a good game and an entertaining game.

“There was a lot of action in both boxes and some very good play.

“What made it interesting too was two different set-ups and two different strategies.

Sheffield United go with a 3-5-2 and we go 4-3-3.

“I thought we deserved at least a draw, we had some really good chances and they had some good chances.

To be honest when we have played Sheffield United in the past there has been very little in the games – it is often who can punish one another more.

“This was the type of game we wanted, a good intensity and a good opposition who will always have a go – Chris Wilder demands that off them and we are the same.”

Neil has been satisfied with how pre-season has gone so far, North End unbeaten in their warm-up games while also beating Mansfield in the Carabao Cup.

“If you look at the games we have taken, we have not made it easy on ourselves,” said Neil.

“We played Burnley the other day, we’ve had this one against Sheffield United and now we play Everton.

“We are undefeated so far in the games we have played.

“It is not for points but as a professional you don’t want to lose any game.

“Had it not been for a couple of final passes in the final third not being quite right, we would probably have won the game.

“It is little bits like that we need to get right starting next week.

“I think the fact we scored late on shows the standards we have set ourselves and what is expected now.

“I have worked together with this squad for a few years now and we have got a really good understanding now of what we do.

“They are as determined as anybody to go and have a really good season.”

Against Everton, Neil will flip the squad over and use the players who were on the bench against the Blades.

That will see a return to action for Darnell Fisher who has spent much of pre-season nursing a calf strain.
