Worryingly, a lack of any cutting edge may hint at trouble ahead this season if we do not start to turn things around soon.

One of the pundits on a local broadcast got it ‘bob-on’ just before the start, predicting Cardiff would be very solid defensively and would hit North End on the break.

And sure enough that is precisely what happened, with the breakaway goal early in the second half coming from Preston’s inability to keep possession from set pieces.

This continued throughout the match, letting Cardiff off the hook time and again and effectively wasting the build-up play that had led to a corner or free-kick.

This fan for one is struggling to remember any ‘second phase’ from the Lilywhites, with the Bluebirds winning the second ball with apparent ease on seemingly every occasion.

It meant the visitors never looked stretched and dealt with any of our forward play with some comfort.

Clearly this was frustrating for all of us wearing a Preston stripe, both on and off the pitch, with Jayden Stockley’s face saying it all following a late headed opportunity that he put too close to the keeper and the thunderous look of Alex Neil at the final whistle.

We need to turn around this home form soon if it is not going to start draining that crucial factor of confidence … the magic ingredient that all successful teams possess.
