Preston boss ready to change defence

Darren Ferguson is ready to reshape his defence for Preston North End's clash with Derby County at Pride Park tonight.

Although North End kept a clean sheet in the derby stalemate against Blackpool, PNE boss Ferguson wants to freshen up the back four.

Tom Williams will go straight into the team at left-back after signing on loan from Peterborough for the rest of the season, allowing Billy Jones to move over to right-back in place of Michael Hart.

There could be a change in the middle too, with Youl Mawene possibly joining Hart on the sidelines for a breather, opening the door for a return for Neill Collins or Liam Chilvers.

Ferguson snapped up 29-year-old Williams from his former club after learning that Callum Davidson faces more time out as he recovers from being knocked unconscious.

Playing the right-footed Jones and Eddie Nolan at left-back in recent games hasn't been a major success, the defence looking rather unbalanced.

Williams is out of contract in the summer at Peterborough and had already told Posh he wouldn't be signing a new deal.

Ferguson said: "After Saturday's game I made my mind up that I wanted to get a left-back.

"It was something we could maybe have left until the summer but Callum still being a bit off a return was something I had to take into consideration.

"Playing right-footed players at left-back gives the other team an advantage and has made us look a little bit unbalanced.

"The lads who have played there have done fine, but we needed to bring about a better balance to the team.

"Tom Williams was available, he's a good defender with a sweet left foot and knows this league well."
