Preston boss Alex Neil is enjoying some downtime with the family

Alex Neil knows that football’s return is out of his hands so the Preston manager is taking advantage of spending time with his family.

Neil has decided against watching hours and hours of football footage, something he plans to return to when a resumption is set in stone.

“This is the most time we have spent together as a family,” said Neil.

“When we have had time off in the past, normally I’ve still had things to do, places to be and the kids have been at school.

“If I’m being really honest, I have enjoyed the aspect of having the time off.

“I haven’t done a lot of football work, my priority has been making sure the squad are okay and looking after their welfare.

“I’ve stayed in contact with Peter Ridsdale and if there’s anything I’ve been able to assist with such as Gentry Day and the hampers appeal, I’ve gladly done that.

“Over the last few weeks I’ve exercised quite a lot, got out for a run.

“That has been to try and counteract all the biscuits I’ve been eating!

“Anything with chocolate on I’ve seemed to be eating, that is my weakness.

“I’ve got one of those blue boxes from Marks and Spencers which I’m working my way through.

“I’ve got the dog to take for a walk too, so I’m getting out when I can.”

Neil firmly has both feet in the camp of people who don’t like doing DIY about the house in their spare time.

“I’m not handy about the house I’ve got to admit,” said the Scotsman.

“I’ve had to turn my hand to a couple of things during the lockdown because we’ve not been able to get anyone in to do the jobs.

“I prefer to leave specialist people to do specialist jobs, it’s better that way.”
