Preston North End midfielder Daniel Johnson is to see a specialist later this week to assess the extent of an injury.
Rumours circulated on Monday morning that the 26-year-old had picked up a problem and would be out for a significant length of time.
PNE have now released a statement but it does not disclose the nature of the injury or put a timescale on any recovery.
Johnson would have missed this Saturday’s game against Blackburn Rovers at Deepdale anyway after picking up a fifth booking of the season in the win at Bristol City before the international break.
“Following speculation on Monday, the club can confirm that midfielder Daniel Johnson has picked up an injury and will see a specialist later this week,” North End’s statement read.
“Until Daniel has seen the specialist, the club are unsure of the severity of the injury and therefore cannot confirm a timescale for his recovery.”
Any absence comes at the worst possible time for Johnson who has forced his way into Alex Neil’s side in recent weeks, starting the last six games in all competitions.
Injuries have blighted the first part of the Lilywhites' season. Sean Maguire, Billy Bodin, Josh Harrop and Calum Woods have all been out for extended periods.
