As Jordan Hugill and Callum Robinson spur each other on to be the leading scorer there’s another battle going on in the PNE squad.
A confrontation with Birmingham City’s Kerim Frei on Tuesday night saw Ben Pearson go back to the top of North End’s disciplinary chart.
The former Manchester United youngster, one of Preston’s players of the year, now has 12 bookings.
He has already served bans for reaching five and 10 respectively with another kicking in at 15.
This time it would be a three-game suspension, a hefty fine and a meeting with the FA down at Wembley.
His combative style is undoubtedly a big feature of his game, but is it too much?
There’s no cut off when it comes to the next threshold meaning Pearson will more than likely be banned for six games across the season.
He’s a fantastic talent and at just 22 is only going to get better, hopefully that will also see him cut out the silly bookings, plenty of them having come for dissent.
Cunningham sits on 11, again on the high side, with Hugill third on seven.
For the latter it’s certainly an occupational hazard of his style of play and you certainly wouldn’t want to stop him harassing defenders, the striker’s work rate being such a big part of his game.
