The initiative encouraging football fans to use the lack of top games due to the international break to watch a non-league side was supported by the former United supremo, who made the short trip from his Preston home to watch an old friend’s new team make waves in the West Lancashire Premier Division.

Longridge Town moved into the top three for the first time this season with a convincing 5-1 demolition of Lostock St Gerards at Inglewhite Road.

Moyes who was at the game with his father on a bright and sunny afternoon for watching football said: “Longridge look good to me and they have scored some very good goals.”

Asked if he had a new position lined up he added: “No . l’m just here to enjoy the game and support an old friend.”

That old friend was non other than former PrestonNorth End team mate Lee Ashcroft, who in the summer took over as manager of Longridge Town.

Ashcroft said later: “It was great to see David (Moyes) down here watching us.

“I bumped into him on the Sunday previous and hadn’t seen him for a while . I suggested he might like to come down and take a look at us.

“He promised me he would get to one of our games and on ‘Non-League Day’ it was good to see him, and by all accounts he was impressed with us.

“Back in my playing days I played with Mosey and then he was my manager.

“His coaching was first class and l learned a lot off him which I will always be grateful for.

“Hopefully we’ll see him again soon.”
