Preston North End boss Graham Westley thinks that Harry Redknapp will succeed Fabio Capello as England manager.

Although Stuart Pearce will take charge of England’s friendly against Holland later this month, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is the red-hot favourite to replace Capello long term.

Capello quit the England job on Thursday after disagreeing with the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of the captaincy until the conclusion of criminal proceedings against him for an alleged racist comment towards Anton Ferdinand.

Westley said: “I saw Fabio Capello talking at a Pro-Licence conference a couple of weeks ago.

“I got the feeling then that perhaps something could be in the offing.

“It is not a surprise to many people that he has gone.

“The important thing now is to get the focus right and get plans in place to give the country the best chance for the Euros.

“When you look at what the press are saying, and in situations like this they are not often wrong, then Harry Redknapp certainly has got the majority of support around the country.

“I think we don’t have to look too much further away than that to find an answer.”

At his Thursday morning press conference to look ahead to PNE’s visit to Tranmere on Saturday, Westley revealed that Paul Coutts had returned to training with North End this week and caught the eye.

Last week, Westley took the captaincy off Coutts and advised him to spend a couple of days away from Deepdale.

He said: “I told Couttsy to come back into my office and tell me he could play wholeheartedly for this club.

“He did that this week, he is back in training and trained exceptionally well.

“That bodes well, and a player of his talent should be attracting interest at Premier League level, there’s no question about that.

“He has got fantastic ability on the ball and a great contribution to make.”

Coutts is suspended for the Tranmere clash and Tuesday’s home game against Hartlepool after collecting 10 bookings this season.
