Preston North End manager Simon Grayson is among the front runners with the bookies for the Sunderland job.
His odds dropped to 8/1 on Monday night, with him third favourite in the betting.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is the firm favourite, with Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough second.
Garry Monk, who left Leeds last week, is fourth in the betting behind Grayson.
Sunderland are looking for a new manager following the resignation of David Moyes last week in the wake of the Black Cats' relegation to the Championship.
They have had seven permanent managers in eight years.
Grayson has also been linked with the Hull City job, the Tigers without a boss after Marco Silva left the club.
