Patrick Bauer flying the flag for Preston North End in FourFourTwo poll
Patrick Bauer is Preston North End’s sole representative in the top 50 EFL players listed by football magazine FourFourTwo.
The German central defender came in at No.44 in the magazine’s list.
Although Bauer has been very solid in his first season at Deepdale since last July’s Bosman arrival from Charlton Athletic, it is a puzzle to see included ahead of some of his team-mates.
Ben Pearson and Ben Davies are notable absentees, so too Daniel Johnson.
For a player of Pearson’s influence not to be recognised, is surprising.
For many North End fans, the midfielder has been their player of the year so far.
With PNE having been in the Championship’s top six for the majority of the season, they must be doing something right.
The views of journalists and fans’ websites are used to put the top 50 together.
With Pearson being a player who doesn’t exactly make himself popular with the opposition, that might have counted against him.
There might be others more eye-catching to make a best Championship XI, but to not make an EFL-wide top 50 seems strange.
Two former North End players currently plying their trade in League Two have made the top 50.
Not surprisingly, Eoin Doyle is in there after a fine season with Swindon, coming in at No.27.
The Irish striker has netted 25 league goals for the Wiltshire outfit, firstly on loan and then after making the move permanent.
Leyland’s Danny Mayor squeezed into the top 50 at No.49.
The winger, who left PNE in 2012, is a regular in the Plymouth side having joined them last summer.
