"I taught him that!": John Welsh hails former Preston team mate Jordan Pickford's sliding tackle in England's win over Spain

Former Preston North End skipper John Welsh might just have had a hand in England's win over Spain on Tuesday night.

The pair were PNE team mates, Pickford on loan from Sunderland before going on to star for Everton and his country.

Welsh, known for his tough-tackling, seemingly rubbed off on the England No.1 during their time together during the first half of the 2015-16 season.

“Well I can finally say I taught Pickford something..great tackle haha,” the 34-year-old posted on Twitter during the game.

Pickford had tried to play his way out of trouble only to be robbed of possession by Rodrigo, recovering to spare his blushes in England’s impressive UEFA Nations League win.

Welsh’s Grimsby side are 21st in League Two, the midfielder having made 11 appearances in league and cup for the Mariners having been released by PNE in the summer.
