Former Preston North End winger Daryl Horgan on the move from Hibernian to Wycombe

The Irishman has joined Championship newcomers Wycombe Wanderers from Hibernian.

It was Hibs who North End sold Horgan to for £100,000 in August 2018, Wycombe believed to have paid £50,000 for his services this time.

An impressive display for the Lilywhites in their 5-1 FA Cup win over Wycombe in January 2018 has stuck with Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth ever since.

Horgan scored that day and gave the Chairboys’ back four a hard time.

So when it came to doing some recruitment ahead of the new season, Ainsworth dug into the memory bank.

Former North End fans’ favourite Ainsworth told the Wycombe website: “Daryl is someone we’ve kept an eye on ever since he put in that outstanding performance against us and we believe he’s ideally suited to the way we play.

“He’s quick, he’s direct, he loves to run at the defence and he’s got a strong goal threat in terms of scoring and creating chances for his team-mates.

“I’m excited to see what he can do for us and his arrival gives us extra firepower going forward as we look forward to starting on the front foot in the Championship.”

North End signed Horgan in January 2017 after he had reached the end of his contract with Dundalk.

He joined along with Andy Boyle, both having played a prominent role in Dundalk winning the League of Ireland title and performing well in the Europa League.

Horgan made 15 starts and 28 substitute appearances in Preston colours, scoring four goals.

He also won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in his time at North End.

Unable to get a regular place in Alex Neil’s side, Horgan moved to Hibs two years ago and has done well at Easter Road.

He started 54 games in all competitions and came off the bench 27 times.

Horgan, 28 had started four of Hibs’ five Scottish Premier League games this season but was left out of their 1-0 home defeat to Aberdeen last Sunday ahead of the move to Wycombe going through.

Hibs head coach Jack Ross said: “Daryl was a genuine pleasure to work with – a manager’s dream in the way he applied himself every day.

“I’m disappointed to lose him but it’s a good opportunity for Daryl and his family.

“I wish them all the luck in the world.”

North End are scheduled to meet Horgan’s new club Wycombe at Deepdale on December 5, with the reverse fixture at Adams Park on March 13.

The Buckinghamshire club came up from League One via the play-offs, beating Oxford United 2-1 at Wembley in the play-offs in July.
