Westley returned to the Hertfordshire club in December but Stevenage won only twice in 15 games in all competitions under him.

They had lost six League Two games in a row, the latest at home to Graham Alexander's Salford City side on Saturday.

He stepped down from the job on Sunday, with Stevenage seven points adrift at the bottom of League Two.

It was seven years ago this week that Westley left North End after 13 months in charge.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace told his club's website: ""We are uncomfortable making yet another change as Graham has worked tirelessly for the club since the day he arrived, setting up procedures and bringing some good quality new faces.

"But with six straight defeats and one win in 13 league games, we are running out of time and we have to try something new."
