Preston North End’s head of youth development Graham Alexander is set to land the Fleetwood Town manager’s job.

It’s understood that negotiations are taking place between North End and the Cod Army about the Highbury Stadium vacancy.

Alexander, 41, was appointed to the PNE coaching staff in the summer after bringing the curtain down on a playing career which saw him play more than 1,000 games.

Last season he had a month-long spell as North End’s joint caretaker manager with David Unsworth, between the sacking of Phil Brown and appointment of Graham Westley.

Fleetwood sacked Micky Mellon in the aftermath of last Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Aldershot, Mellon having guided the club to two promotions.
