The veteran forward returned to Deepdale last summer to much fanfare having enjoyed a fine spell with the club more than a decade earlier.

He scored 37 goals in 107 appearances for the Lilywhites between 2005 and 2007 and won an England cap while with the club, scoring on his only senior international appearance in a 3-0 win over Andorra.

North End sold him to Portsmouth for £6m and he went on to play for Burnley and Leicester in the Premier League, before enjoying stints with Middlesbrough and Derby County.

Unfortunately, Nugent - now aged 35 - did not set the world alight last season, managing just one goal from 25 appearances.

It is understood PNE have circulated his name to other clubs for transfer. He has a year remaining on his current North End deal.
