He made 32 appearances, the majority coming off the bench, but found the net in the derby wins at Bolton and Blackburn having started the games.

The 23-year-old found the net five times in all, rounding-off the campaign with the late equaliser against Leeds on the final day.

Once he has had a holiday, Hugill will start getting in shape for his third season with North End, one he is determined to push forward in.

Hugill told the Evening Post: “It was a big season and an enjoyable one.

“Before the start of the season, I set the target of establishing myself in the Preston squad and as a Championship player.

“I proved to myself I could play at this level, I worked hard to do that and scored a few goals too.

“Overall, I was really happy with how things went.

“I think I really found my feet in that spell of games when I was starting games.

“There were the goals at Bolton and Blackburn which were special occasions for the players and supporters.

“They were a bit different, the Bolton one I just put my head in and at Blackburn it was a volley from a great cross.

“The way I see it, they all count however they go in, although the Blackburn one was my best.

“I’m confident that I can go on to score more goals next season.

“The aim is to finish higher up the table next time and for myself to score more goals.

“Before then, I’ll enjoy the summer and have a holiday.

“Once I’m back, I’ll be raring to go and looking to get as fit and sharp as possible.”

Hugill, who turns 24 early next month, says North End can be very happy with how they performed in their first season back in the Championship.

After briefly being bottom of the table in October, there was a steady climb up the table with them getting as high as eighth.

In the end they finished 11th with 62 points.

Said Hugill: “It was a good season for us as a team.

“The gaffer didn’t change too much last summer, he kept a lot of the squad together and added to that a few new faces who he felt could add something.

“It is testament to the gaffer, Glynn Snodin and Steve Thompson that they kept the great team spirit going, that being something which carried us such a long way.”

With North End looking to bring in two strikers over the summer, Hugill will potentially have strong competition up front next season.
