A Mike Jackson hat-trick fuelled Preston North End’s 7-2 drubbing of local futsal rivals Blackpool A at Leeds Arena.
The convincing victory saw North End leapfrog Blackpool into third spot in the League One table. Futsal is a form of continental-style five-a-side football, played with a smaller ball.
Despite an even contest, PNE were 3-0 to the good at half-time thanks to some brilliant team goals.
Blackpool came out strongly in the second half and seemed certain to pull one back but two effective counter-attacks from PNE put them firmly in control at 5-0.
Tony Penfold and Dylan Nagliati eventually reduced the deficit but a treble from man-of-the-match Jackson, a double from Paul Jones and a goal apiece for striker Ryan Kay and defender Joe Singleton, ensured PNE strolled to victory.
And hat-trick hero Jonny Banks’ last-gasp goal sealed a 4-3 victory for PNE’s futsal B team over Blackpool’s B team at Leeds Arena.
Josh Tomlinson gave PNE an early lead but they failed to build on their fine start and were punished by a clinical Blackpool side.
Goals from Clayton Jones and Kieran Bosomworth gave Pool a 2-1 advantage at half-time.
PNE spent much of the second half squandering opportunities and Blackpool made North End pay for their missed chances by extending their lead to 3-1.
But Banks’ dramatic late treble ensured third-placed North End reduced the gap on League Two leaders Blackburn Rovers to just two points.
PNE community officer Kyle Armstrong said the club are looking for their next futsal stars. He said: “We are actively recruiting for next year’s intake of students.”
