Tempers flared in the 90th minute of the game which Wolves won 3-2, with players from both sides involved in a melee.

Moments earlier, referee Stephen Martin had blown for a foul against Alan Browne which was to result in the PNE midfielder getting sent-off for his second booking of the afternoon.

Distracted by the melee, Mr Martin failed to show the red card to Browne who left the pitch assuming he had been dismissed.

But Browne was called back from the dressing room once calm had been restored for the referee to show him the second yellow card and then red.

It is understood that North End's fine was bigger than Wolves as it took into account this was a second offence committed by them in a matter of months - the other was at Huddersfield in April.
