Southport ensured their place in next season’s Conference Premier with a battling 2-2 home draw against third-placed Grimsby Town in front of 1,968 spectators.
Things looked ominous for the Sandgrounders when the visitors opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Jordan Chapel, unmarked at the far post, tapping in after a free-kick from ex-Port hero Scott Brown.
But just 40 seconds into the second half, Louis Almond made a run down the left and, from 25 yards out, blasted the ball past keeper James McKeown for the equaliser.
Eight minutes later, captain Luke Foster made it 2-1.
The Mariners went on the attack but Southport held on until the 85th minute when Shaun Pearson headed in Brown’s corner.
In the Conference North, the title race will go all the way to the last game of the season after AFC Fylde’s 4-1 comeback victory at Harrogate Town.
James Walshaw scored a 17th-minute free-kick for the home side but two goals in first-half stoppage time gave the Coasters a 2-1 lead thanks to strikes from Danny Rowe and Danny Lloyd.
Rowe then completed his hat-trick in the first 10 minutes of the second half, scoring a penalty for his second and a great goal for this third to give Fylde an unassailable 4-1 lead.
Barrow’s 4-1 win at home to Tamworth keeps them top of the table by two points from Fylde, and they face a trip to Lowestoft next weekend, whilst the Coasters entertain Gloucester City.
In the NPL First Division North, Bamber Bridge were 4-1 victors at New Mills.
Darren Green, Stuart Vasey (2) and Paul Alexander got Brig’s goals.
And 4-1 was the score as Clitheroe went down at Mossley.
Burscough lost 2-1 at home to Salford City, while Kendal Town won 3-2 at Farsley.
Lancaster City drew 0-0 at home to Darlington 1883.
