Southport lost 4-2 at Conference Premier relegation rivals Alfreton Town at the Impact Arena in a game full of incident.
Leading scorer Richard Brodie, opened the scoring for the Sandgrounders in the 12th minute, his shot being badly fumbled by keeper Jason Mooney.
For the rest of the half they hung on comfortably to their lead.
But things went wrong within two minutes of the restart when captain Luke Foster fouled Tom Shaw in the area and Bradley Wood converted the spot-kick.
Three minutes later, Karl Hawley volleyed home a second and on 64 minutes, Callum Howe headed in Don Bradley’s corner to make it 3-1 for the Reds.
Southport immediately hit back, Paul Rutherford finally netting his first goal for the club.
But an equaliser never materialised and Alfreton were gifted a fourth goal in the 87th minute when Joe Connor turned Bradley’s cross into his own net.
The result left Southport still in 20th place in the table but now only a point above Alfreton, with one game in hand.
Chorley’s Conference North game against Guiseley was postponed due a frozen pitch, as was AFC Fylde’s trip to Hednesford.
