Jamie Milligan’s fine free-kick saw Bamber Bridge into the second round of the Integro Doodson Sport Cup at the expense of Lancaster City on Tuesday night.

The former Fleetwood man produced the game’s only real moment of quality 18 minutes from time as he fired a 25-yard shot into the top corner.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game as Brig ended the four-game unbeaten run of their Evo-Stik First Division North rivals.

The Dolly Blues made the brighter start and could have gone in front 75 seconds in but Terry Cummings could only direct a free header from a Ryan Winder corner wide.

It was an even game though in the opening stages, Chris Marlow’s shot from distance not troubling City stopper Mike Hale nine minutes in.

Hale was called into action midway through the half but Alistair Waddecar’s effort was straight at the Blues number one after his defence failed to clear a cross from the right.

At the other end the hosts came close shortly after with Craig Carney driving at the Bamber Bridge backline before seeing a 20-yard shot helped over by Lee Dovey.

Dovey’s next save 10 minutes before interval was less convincing as he just about navigated Winder’s free-kick over the crossbar as clear-cut chances continued to be few and far between in a first period full of endeavour but lacking in goal-mouth action.

Both sides continued to fall short in attack after the break, City a correct choice of pass short of several good chances in the opening minutes of the second period.

Substitute Daniel Shearwood did find his man on 65 minutes but an on-rushing Dovey was on hand to deny Cummings’ effort on the stretch when through on goal.

It was the visitors who got their noses in front on 72 minutes however with a goal not befitting the rest of the contest.

City were harshly penalised 25 yards from goal with Milligan stepping up and firing a left-foot shot into the top corner leaving Hale with no chance.

Phil Brown’s hosts huffed and puffed in search of a leveller that in truth never looked like coming, apart from Winder's late shot wide with Brig now able to look forward to round two.
