Four minutes later, Andrew Teague – a summer signing from Chorley – levelled the scores and the sides went in level at the break.

But seven minutes into the second half, Alex Howes found the net with what turned out to be the winner for United.

Bamber Bridge’s scheduled fixture at Ashton United had been postponed in the week as a result of a positive Covid-19 test.

In the NPL North West Division, Ross Dent got the only goal at Shawbridge as Clitheroe beat Prescot Cables.

Dent’s first goal since his return to the Blues’ fold came in the 62nd minute.

Elsewhere, Kendal Town were held to a goalless draw at home to Workington.
