The 26-year-old goalkeeper put pen to paper on Thursday on a deal which extends his stay at Deepdale until the summer of 2020.

Maxwell still had two years to run on the contract signed when he joined North End on a Bosman from Fleetwood Town last summer.

But his form this season has seen him rewarded with the new deal and fresh terms.

Maxwell said: "It is fantastic to commit to the club for a longer period, it means I'm here to help the club carry on the good work it has been doing.

"We have got a fantastic squad here which matches my ambition.

"The club is desperate to get promoted to the Premier League and that is something I've wanted to achieve since a young age.

"Hopefully that can be done this year through the play-offs, otherwise this season can be used a bridge to an exciting season next time."

After starting the campaign as back-up to Anders Lindegaard, Maxwell has played 26 successive league games in the first-team and the 27th will come against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Maxwell said: "When I first signed I said I wanted to make the No.1 shirt my own, to challenge myself in the Championship.

"I've managed to get myself in the team and I'm not going to rest on my laurels.

"I'm enjoying myself here, testing myself against Championship opposition.

"The staff here have helped me progress, the gaffer has provided the platform and Alan Kelly has been a major part of that.

"Kels goes that extra mile with you, it is an ongoing process."
