A new tribute to Preston North End legend Sir Tom Finney has been unveiled at Deepdale.

A tile mosaic of the famous ‘Splash’ picture now takes pride of place in the main reception of the stand which carries his name.

The five metre wide mosaic was put together using 11,999 tiles and has been donated to North End by local company Tile Mart.

PNE boss Simon Grayson was on hand to conduct the official unveiling with Tile Mart’s business development manager Luckman Ismail.

Artisan craftsmen in Spain put the mosaic together, with a new type of ‘invisible’ grout used to give it a more vibrant look.

Conducting the official handing over of the mosaic, Mr Ismail said: “We always had a warm relationship with Sir Tom and his family.

“He opened our Preston and Bolton showrooms.

“As a company we wanted to show our appreciation, in our own little way, for someone we knew as being the greatest ambassador for football.

“We are really grateful to North End for accepting the mosaic panel and we hope it brings fond memories of Sir Tom Finney.”

The mosaic has been embedded into the wall in the Sir Tom Finney Stand reception.

A bigger mosaic of the Splash, made up of 145,000 pieces and unveiled in 2011, takes pride of place at Tile Mart’s head office in Queen Street, Preston.

Sir Tom, who passed away in February aged 91, made 472 appearances for PNE.
