Morecambe sign Burnley defender Whitmore on loan

The 20-year-old featured for The Shrimps in their opening pre-season friendly at Bamber Bridge and has impressed in training.

The central defender, born in Newcastle, made 24 appearances for Gateshead in the National League last season, scoring twice.

Shrimps boss Jim Bentley said: “Alex is a great lad who wants to work hard and do well in the game.

“He’s played at a good level last season in the Conference Premier and hopefully he can continue his progression with Morecambe Football Club.

“I’d like to thank Burnley Football Club for letting us take Alex on loan and hopefully in the time he’s with us he’ll become a better player.”
