The Shrimps have been drawn in Northern Section Group A for the 2018/19 season, which sees them meet Carlisle United, Sunderland and an invited Under-21 side.

It’s the second consecutive season in which Morecambe will play Carlisle, having lost 2-0 to them at the Globe Arena last August.

They will also reacquaint themselves with Sunderland, having lost at the Stadium of Light when the two sides met in the 2012/13 Capital One Cup.

The Under-21 sides taking part will be Everton, Leicester City, Manchester City, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, the Shrimps will not be facing Newcastle as the Magpies will not be allowed to meet Sunderland in the group stages, as is the case with Southampton and Portsmouth in the southern-based half of the draw.

The EFL explained: “The EFL has committed to work in conjunction with the police to avoid high-profile clashes in the group stages.”

The full draw will be made from 1pm next Wednesday, July 18.
