Morecambe boss Derek Adams says the signings of Liam Gibson and Yann Songo’o will further strengthen his squad for the challenges ahead this season.

Gibson made his first start for the Shrimps at Southend United on Saturday and Songo’o came off the bench in the 2-1 victory at Roots Hall after both joined the club last week.

Gibson is a left-back who began his career with Newcastle and played in League Two for Grimsby Town last season.

Songo’o became the latest member of the squad, rejoining Adams after previously playing for him at Ross County and Plymouth Argyle.

The Shrimps are back in action tonight when they travel to Salford City in the EFL Trophy before hosting Port Vale on Saturday.

Adams said: “Liam did well on Saturday and Yann had some time to show what he is all about.

“He is a defensive midfield player who will go in where it hurts and stop attackers getting into good areas, and pass it simple. Sometimes that is what you need in your team because not everyone can be a pretty football player.

“You have to have players with different styles and Yann is different to what we have.

“I was pleased to bring them in because we now have competition for places throughout the side which is good.

“You only have to look at the players who missed out at Southend and didn’t even make the bench.

“They are all good players who have already played a lot of games for us this year.

“It is going to be important that we have that squad as we have a lot of games in a short period of time.

“We still have 43 games in the league to play, the EFL Trophy and the FA Cup to come, and we will need everyone.”
