Four second half goals earned Morecambe a second successive victory as they sealed a double over 10-man Newport.
It was a second successive home win for Jim Bentley’s side who, after going 10 games without a win before the weekend success over Phil Brown’s Southend are now just five points outside the play off spots.
Once again though the Shrimps had to do things the hard way as they fell behind to an early goal when the visitors scored on 13 minutes. A right wing corner was met by Harry Worley and after his header was blocked Tom Naylor was in the right place at the right time to hammer the ball home.
The home side then went on to dominate the rest of the first half but a mixture of good defending and woeful finishing saw them struggle to get back into the game.
Young striker Jack Sampson produced one of the misses of the season on 19 minutes when he missed his kick completely six yards out with an open goal ahead of him. Andy Fleming then dragged a shot wide.
The game changed direction on 57 minutes when Naylor was then sent off after bringing down Kevin Ellison when he was the last defender.
Jamie Devitt scored from the spot and Morecambe went on a goal spree with Ellison putting the Shrimps ahead after rounding keeper Ian McLoughlin on the hour.
Shrimps’ substitute Jack Redshaw then clinched the game for the home side with a header from 18 yards on 71 minutes from an Andy Fleming corner.
That was followed by a cool finish seven minutes from time when he took the ball 12 yards out and drilled a low shot past the Exiles’ keeper.
