Morecambe’s miserable home form continued with a poor defeat against basement club Hartlepool.
The visitors travelled to the Globe Arena without an away win in five months but were gifted the three points by an Andy Parrish own goal on 35 minutes after the defender poked a long Nicky Featherstone through ball past his own goalkeeper Andreas Arestidou.
Hartlepool started the game on the front foot and went close to opening the scoring on eight minutes when defender Dan Jones headed a Jonathan Franks corner inches wide.
After a sluggish start Morecambe began to threaten with Kevin Ellison and Laurence Wilson both blazing efforts over the bar before Hartlepool took the lead through the softest of own goals.
Featherstone split the Morecambe defence open with a superb pass to the onrushing Ryan Bird, he steadied himself but before he could strike, Parrish knocked it past the onrushing Arestidou and looked on in horror as the ball trickled over the line.
Morecambe hit back with Ellison being played in neatly by Paul Mullin but with only Scott Flinders to beat shot weakly straight at the visiting ‘keeper.
Jim Bentley’s side dominated the second half but struggled to create any clear cut chances as the visitors defended superbly.
The Shrimps should have been level just after the hour when Jack Redshaw somehow failed to tap the ball into the net from a yard out after a low cross from Padraig Amond flashed across goal
The Shrimps then went close on three occasions in the space of a few seconds.
First Scott Flinders produced a wonder save in the 71st minute to tip away a close range Ellison header, then Featherstone cleared the rebound off the line before Redshaw’s final shot was brilliantly blocked by David Mirfin.
The pressure continued when Ellison hit the crossbar in the 76th minute from an excellent Wilson cross after he got ahead of Mirfin and saw his near post flick strike the woodwork.
As the Shrimps pushed bodies forward Ryan Bird almost doubled Pools’ lead with 12 minutes left, he rounded Arestidou but there was two defenders on the line and his shot was cleared by Mark Hughes.
Morecambe broke at speed and Amond was presented with a golden chance to bag a late leveller but he shot horribly over the bar and Morecambe’s hopes of salvaging a point were gone.
