The veteran’s return to the Globe Arena last season ended with a ruptured Achilles injury at Crewe Alexandra in April.

The 37-year-old was expected to be out until Christmas and, with his one-year deal at the club having expired, his prospects were up in the air given that all the other out-of-contract players had determined their futures.

Bentley said: “Talks are ongoing with Garry because we didn’t want it to be a case of ‘he’d ruptured his Achilles and goodbye.’

“He’s a big name and a big part of the club so we’re hoping to use him in other ways like hospitality and in the community.

“The club can give him that platform while he’s recovering from his injury.”
