Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Stevenage, the Shrimps are now seventh in the League Two table ahead of tonight’s trip to Bolton Wanderers (7pm).

They go into the game well placed in the division, thanks in part to their knack of scoring late goals.

Nine have come in the last 15 minutes of matches so far this season, a vital attribute as only 10 points separate leaders Cambridge United from 10th-placed Leyton Orient.

It is perhaps the club’s best chance to reach League One for the first time since the play-off semi-final defeat to Dagenham and Redbridge in 2009/10.

There is the theory that League Two is tight this year as a consequence of Covid-19 and the impact it has had on clubs in terms of player availability and congested fixture lists because of postponements.

The Morecambe boss, however, has his own explanation, saying: “There’s not one outstanding team in the league.

“Over recent years, I know from my time at Plymouth, we were an outstanding team, Portsmouth were an outstanding team and Luton Town were as well.

“We don’t have that at this moment in time. What we have got is teams that use a certain style of play, like Carlisle United and Cheltenham Town, and the number of goals they get from set-plays or long throws.

“You have got different styles further down the league and it’s a good blend in terms of what you have to try and deal with.

“You just have to look at the impact Tranmere have had in getting into the play-offs recently, where Mansfield have been or how Newport were right at the top and then dropped down.”

The Shrimps have also announced amended kick-off times for two of their forthcoming home games.

The matches against Salford City and Crawley Town on Tuesday, February 23 and Tuesday, March 2 respectively, will now begin at 6.30pm.
