The Shrimps earned their first victory in five league games thanks to Carlos Mendes-Gomes’ third goal of the season after 12 minutes.

Although Barrow were a man down following Sam Hird’s red card on the quarter-hour, they gave Morecambe an uncomfortable night with Scott Quigley proving a constant threat to the home defenders.

“For the first 20 minutes we played ever so well. We passed it well, we opened up Barrow a number of times and eventually got the first goal.

“It was a great ball from Adam Phillips in behind for Carlos and he got the goal.

“You’re thinking ‘how many is it going to be?’ after that. We had some good openings and we made some very good runs.

“Then they had a player sent off and that helped Barrow. They changed their formation, went to a low block, and we didn’t move the ball quickly enough for a period of time.

“After half-time, I thought Barrow started well but we still created a number of openings as the game went on.

“Barrow came into it, they went forward and created a number of good opportunities but without really troubling Mark (Halstead) in goal.

“We could have added to our goals. Our corner kicks weren’t good enough but when we get to that final third, our final pass has to be better.”

While Morecambe had the numerical advantage for much of the game, their inability to find a second goal always gave Barrow hope.

Quigley forced Mark Halstead into a close-range stop and shot narrowly wide before Morecambe eventually claimed the points.

“They had to be solid, they don’t really want to go anywhere at times,” Adams said of facing a side reduced to 10 men.

“If we get the second goal, then we go on and win by a few goals, but we didn’t.

“As the evening goes on it becomes difficult. They put balls into the box, get free-kicks and corners but we defend them.”
