The 22-year-old has led the club’s promotion challenge this season, top-scoring for the Shrimps with 13 goals.

Those performances have seen a number of scouts in attendance at the Mazuma Stadium, as well as the national media spotlight being trained upon him.

However, rather than become distracted by it, Mendes Gomes has carried on regardless and starred with a goal and an assist in the midweek win against Scunthorpe United.

Adams said: “Carlos is a fantastic boy, you can tell that by his work ethic in training and in games.

“You could see that on Tuesday with the goal he scored and his overall performance that night.”

Speculation has linked Mendes Gomes with a number of clubs in recent weeks, most recently Rangers.

Though he only signed a one-year deal with Morecambe last summer, it’s rumoured that contract contains an option for the club to extend it by a further 12 months.

Adams would not say one way or the other if that was the case but is sanguine about the club’s position.

He said: “It’s not beneficial for me, the club or Carlos to say what the situation is but I’m very comfortable with it as I’ve said all along.

“Until there’s a bid put in for any of our players, speculation is all it is.

“It is a good thing to have though. If other clubs are being linked with your players, it means something positive must be happening.”

Another player to pick up praise in midweek was Yann Songo’o, who netted his fourth goal of the season.

He capitalised on Mendes Gomes’ cross to complete the Shrimps’ scoring, though it was his display sitting in front of the back four which caught the eye.

“Yann plays a very important role in the team as does someone like Cole Stockton,” Adams said.

“He allows the other players around and about to go and play their game but it was an exceptional performance.

“That role depends on how you set out your team and what league you’re playing in but he certainly plays it well.”
