It said: “The Trust acknowledges the statement from Morecambe Football Club today regarding the incident surrounding the dismissal of Yann Songo’o against Tranmere Rovers on 30th January.

“While it is right for the club to have time to conduct its own investigations, we should be clear that football has no place for discrimination. It is totally unacceptable and not defendable through ignorance.

“It is an integral part of the Shrimps Trust constitution to be a representative organisation which is open and accessible to all supporters of Morecambe Football Club regardless of their age, income, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexuality or religious or moral belief.

“We will continue to work with the club to ensure that the Mazuma Stadium remains the welcoming, family environment for all supporters that we know and love.

“There is no room for homophobia in football and there is still plenty to be done to make the sport truly inclusive. The Trust supports the EFL’s ‘Not Today or Any Day’ anti-discrimination campaign.

“The focus of this year’s campaign is ensuring a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all whether we’re together, apart, online or on the pitch as we collectively work to Make Sport Everyone’s Game.”
