Magpies boss is eager to finish with flourish

Chorley boss Matt Jansen is hoping for a hat-trick of wins to end the campaign in style.

The Magpies are still eighth in the National League North table and although a play-off spot is not mathematically impossible, Jansen is not expecting one.

Chorley are eight points off fifth-placed Boston United and have the chance to pick up nine points from their final games against Brackley, recently crowned champions Solihull Moors and AFC Telford.

And Jansen is keen to end the season with three successive wins.

He said: “A play-off spot is pretty unlikely. We have been hampered by our results over Easter.

“We had a bit of a dip in form after a really good run. We had a couple of injuries and suspensions and we were not able to get anyone on loan.

“But we have had two good performances in our last two games in the undeserved defeat at Tamworth, and our deserved win against Gainsborough.

“It is not mathematically impossible but we will see were we are if we win our next two games.

“I want to win every game I play – I’m a winner.”

Chorley travel to relegation threatened Brackley Town tomorrow.

Jansen is preparing for a scrap and is not underestimating the 19th-placed side who are fighting to retain their National League North status.

But he says that if his men perform like they did in last Saturday’s 3-1 win against Gainsborough Trinity then they will get the three points.

He said: “Brackley have been struggling a little bit.

“They are fighting for their lives and it is always going to be a difficult game when teams are fighting for survival.

“If we can put the same performance in that we did on Saturday we should get a result.”

As his first season in charge draws to a close, Jansen has one eye on next term.

The Magpies boss says he is happy with the core of his side but he wants to add a few more faces to strengthen the squad over the summer.

He said: “I’m always looking to strengthen.

“I’m hoping to bring in a couple of players in the summer.

“We have a good nucleus and a good team spirit, I just want to add to that.

“I have got two, three, maybe four players I want to bring in to strengthen that just might take us that step further.

“We are not far off, I know that, but with a couple of additions we will be fighting for the title next season.”

One of Jansen’s recent additions, full-back Courtney Meppen-Walter, was caught in possession in the build-up to Nathan Jarman’s goal in the win against Gainsborough.

But Jansen says he wants the defender to carry on getting on the ball but added that they still want to get the former Manchester City youth player up to full fitness.

He said: “Courtney has done fantastically well in recent weeks – we are desperate to get him fully fit.”
