Stockton ran on to a long ball, and after a good first touch, got in a shot that forced a decent save from James McKeown.

The home side hit back with a chance of their own when Lenell John-Lewis lobbed Kyle Letheren but sent the ball just over the bar.

It was the Shrimps who scored the all-important first through Stockton on 22 minutes.

A smart through ball from Aaron Wildig played him in down the left-hand side and the striker produced a superb finish to find a small gap in the bottom left-hand corner.

Six minutes later, it was 2-0. Wildig again provided the assist with a dangerous cross that caused all sorts of problems with Songo’o perfectly placed to poke the loose ball home from close range.

Grimsby continued to battle for every loose ball and were denied just before the break when Letheren superbly tipped over John-Lewis’ effort from the edge of the area.

Morecambe started the second half brightly and went close to adding a third on 47 minutes.

Stockton latched on to another long ball and beat the advancing McKeown, only to see his effort cleared off the line by Rollin Menayese.

Grimsby then enjoyed a period of dominance with Jay Matete firing an effort just wide and John-Lewis forcing another fine save from Letheren.

John-Lewis diverted another effort inches wide and the unmarked Waterfall headed narrowly off target before the Shrimps completed the scoring with a third on the counter.

Toumani Diagouraga robbed Luke Spokes of possession to set up a swift attack which saw Ryan Cooney’s cross turned into his own net by the unfortunate Waterfall.
