Joe Garner’s 73rd minute header gave them a 1-0 win at Deepdale, Garner getting on the end of a Calum Woods to find the net for the first time since December 12.

The Owls played with 10 men from the 66th minute onwards after Fernando Forestieri was sent-off for two bookings - the first for simulation, the second for deliberate handball.

Grayson said: “The win delighted me. We knew this was going to be a tough test for us because of the players Sheffield Wednesday have got.

“I challenged the players beforehand that with three games this week, let’s get a win to start with and see where it takes us.

“Everyone of them carried out the plan we had worked on in the week.

“I thought the system suited us again.

“When we needed to defend, we defended and when we broke forward, we did that with some good quality.

“We limited another top team to not having a shot on target.”

Grayson was pleased to see Garner end his two-month barren run in front of goal.

He said: “There has been a lot of talk about Joe not scoring that many goals but what he has done for the rest of the team in that time has been nothing short of fantastic.

“It was a great ball over from Calum Woods - we asked the wing-backs to push on a bit further forward than we have done previously in this system - and Joe got into the right area.

“Joe thoroughly deserved his goal, it was the type he was scoring frequently last season.

“Hopefully he can kick on again.”
