The 30-year-old tasted victory for the very first time as the club’s boss thanks to an excellent 2-1 victory in the Richardson Cup at the Riverside.

After drawing two and losing one of his opening three games in charge, Baker was thrilled to finally get the monkey off his back courtesy of goals from Danny Birch and David Jack.

In his previous games, he had drawn 2-2 and 0-0 with Coppull United and Euxton Villa respectively, while last Wednesday’s game against WLL Premier Division title favourites Charnock Richard ended in a narrow 1-0 loss.

“It was great to get the win,” said Baker. “It was long overdue that’s for sure.

“Performances have been really good and so it wasn’t surprising really to get the win. To be honest, I had it in my mind that we would get it right for the Wrens games.

“I felt the players were not fit enough when I took over.

“I think it’s been good that the games have been quite close together and have come thick and fast.

“It’s given me chance to get my plans across and I thought on Monday night it was just about right.

“I like to keep it solid at the back and stay in games.

“I always like to create chances, but the thing is it’s okay scoring two or three goals a game, but if you’re conceding two or three goals then that’s a problem.

“I was a centre half so my preference is to keep it tight and be organised at set-plays.

“We scored from a free-kick on Monday night and we have not conceded from a corner since I’ve been in charge – all the lads know their jobs.”

This weekend, Garstang travel to Burnley United, who are struggling towards the bottom of the table. Baker will be without Adam Roscoe, who has a knee injury.
